The Lookout Game

Last week, I found the small people playing a new game.

It looked like this.

Apparently, it’s called “Lookout.”

I noticed my eldest was holding a telescope, so I asked them what they were looking out for.

Their answer was illuminating.

“We don’t know. Stuff.”

“Like pirates?” I asked excitedly.

Pause. “Could be.”

“Saber-toothed alien robots?” I tried.

They just stared at me.

“Oh, I know. It’s either Star Wars or Indiana Jones or Lord of the Rings fighters of some sort,” I guessed, based on the latest recurring small people themes.

“Um, not really.”

“Bad guys?” I offered weakly.

Pause. “I suppose.”

I walked away, puzzled for a moment. Then, I thought about it.

Know what I think?

“Lookout” is just an excuse to hang out.

Which is fine by me.

  1. So cute! And you’re right, many of the games my boys play do come down to just hanging out. Not that they’d ever admit it….:)
    aloha!

    1. I guess, isn’t that what we adults do a variation of, really? Come over to our house to swim or fish, or to have dinner, dessert, drinks, whatever, and it’s really much more about hanging out than the official plan.

  2. I could secretly watch & listen to my boys play games like that all day long. Especially when they aren’t arguing about the parameters of the game. 😉

    1. Oh, yes, because we all know establishing the parameters could take all day and involve multiple parental interventions. Yes, when it’s low-key like that, it’s so fun to watch and very revealing often as well.
