It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a great way to improve your vocabulary by focusing on word parts that can ultimately be used to build any number of words. I thought I would add a category of posts that will feature some of these roots, prefixes and suffixes.\u00c2\u00a0 Note: These are not hoity-toity vocabulary lessons.\u00c2\u00a0 Rather, they are meant to be practical for the masses, and, on a good day, mildly entertaining.<\/p>\n<p>So here\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the first Island Mom root, inspired by my more verbal half.<\/p>\n<p>Latin root #1: <strong>LOQU, LOCAT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meaning: speak, talk<\/p>\n<p>Words:<\/p>\n<p>1. <strong>Loquacious<\/strong> (adj) (-ous = full of): full of speaking, talkative<\/p>\n<p>My husband is so <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">loquacious<\/span> I have to set aside time out of my day just to listen to him. I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m being serious here.<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>Eloquence<\/strong> (n) (e- = very, from): speaking with force, fluency, even persuasion<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately for me, he often manages to speak with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">eloquence<\/span> about topics I might otherwise find dull.<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>Magniloquent<\/strong> (adj) (magn = great, large): boastful, lofty speaking, pompous<\/p>\n<p>At times, I might sound <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">magniloquent<\/span> when speaking about my children. At other times, not so much.<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>Circumloquacious<\/strong> (adj) (circum = around): using many words to speak around something and avoid the topic at hand<\/p>\n<p>My husband loves to get all <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">circumloquacious<\/span> during an argument. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s nails-on-chalkboard annoying, unless he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s doing it to someone else \u00e2\u20ac\u201c then it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s more my-kid-just-tripped-face-first-in-the-sand entertaining.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In another life, I taught an etymology class that focused on Latin and Greek roots, prefixes and suffixes.
