LCB had scheduled business in the area for the next few days, but we were hoping to squeeze in a few touristy things as well. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/?attachment_id=3920\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3920\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-3920\" src=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_1071-3-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"697\" height=\"523\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_1071-3-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_1071-3-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_1071-3-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_1071-3-640x480.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 697px) 100vw, 697px\" \/><\/a>This led us, the next day, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Tourism-g41790-Rockport_Cape_Ann_Massachusetts-Vacations.html\">Rockport<\/a>, a coastal town north of Boston, with a gorgeous, kid-explorable coastline, lots of history, walkable streets, and easy access to the train.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/?attachment_id=3922\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3922\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-3922\" src=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_1104-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"697\" height=\"523\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_1104-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_1104-1-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_1104-1-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_1104-1-640x480.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 697px) 100vw, 697px\" \/><\/a>The first afternoon the kids and I decided to walk and get the lay of the land. The town itself juts out into the Atlantic, and the coastline is rocky, so gorgeous water views are everywhere. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/?attachment_id=3923\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3923\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-3923\" src=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_1076-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"697\" height=\"523\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_1076-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_1076-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_1076-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_1076-640x480.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 697px) 100vw, 697px\" \/><\/a>The main part of town runs along the coast and is filled with shops and restaurants, many housed in historic buildings. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a fascinating study in human nature. For instance, there are the ceaseless narrators (in a strange fate-twist, usually also loud-talkers): \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Whoa, that rock\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s got quite the slant. Maybe we should find a way around it. Hold on, I think I have something in my shoe. Oh, wait, no, I think my sock just got bunched up. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s this new pair I got from the outlet last week and I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve never worn them before. Oh, watch that hole, Burt. I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m not sure if you saw that one since you forgot your glasses. Yeah, maybe I shouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have tried out the new socks today. Oh, is that moisture on the rock ahead? It looks like it. I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m going to step very carefully there. I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d hate to slip this far out. By the way, did you read the historical plaque by the road? It says, \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcIn (insert verbose rewording of the plaque\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s contents here).\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Now what do you think that red thing is out in the ocean? A buoy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">You can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t escape the busybodies here: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Martha, look at all those crazy people walking out on those rocks! Can you believe it? Somebody should be taking care of this madness. Do you think they know what they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re doing? That looks frightening and scary! I can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t believe I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t see any signage warning people of the dangers. Did you see that lady\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s shoes? Those are clearly not shoes meant for rock climbing. Really, Martha, this makes me uncomfortable. There are children walking out there. Somebody should do something about this. Did anyone warn about this on Trip Advisor? Pull it up a minute on your phone, Martha.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Blessings to Martha.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Then there are the children and the childlike, their every step wonder-filled. There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s that moment when they stop stepping, at some point on the peninsula, and they take in all that blue, everywhere around them. They\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re the ones to watch. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">And, of course, there are the contemplators, the ones that sit quietly, absorbing everything. They don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t critique, they don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t speak at rapid-fire high pitch; in fact, they say little, or nothing at all. For that I say, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153God bless you. I cannot overstate how much I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t enjoy laundering in public, but the woman working there was friendly and helpful, and all in all, it was probably the best public laundering experience I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve had to date. We spent the rest of the afternoon doing more exploring, and in the evening, we grabbed a quick dinner and headed to Cambridge to check out schools. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/?attachment_id=3936\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3936\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-3936\" src=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_0918-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"697\" height=\"523\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_0918-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_0918-1-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_0918-1-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_0918-1-640x480.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 697px) 100vw, 697px\" \/><\/a>We hit <a href=\"http:\/\/web.mit.edu\/\">MIT<\/a> first and hopped out of the car to begin our self-tour. By self-tour, I mean that I gave the tour, without assistance, in an \u00e2\u20ac\u0153as the spirit moves\u00e2\u20ac\u009d fashion since A.) I left my carefully blown-up tour guide printouts at the hotel, and B.) we were a bit tight on time. This went much as you might imagine. I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m sure many of the students laughed at a woman with more of a\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6humanities bent, roaming the campus, three wide-eyed kids in tow, all while keeping an eye out for LCB, who drove in circles around the campus pursing parking. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/?attachment_id=3939\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3939\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-3939\" src=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_0920-2-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"697\" height=\"523\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_0920-2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_0920-2-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_0920-2-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_0920-2-640x480.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 697px) 100vw, 697px\" \/><\/a>MIT borders the Charles River, with beautiful views of Boston on the other side. Despite my tour, MIT, long on my sons\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 dream school lists, may have secured permanent status there that night. The campus was impressive, and I saw (what I assume was) science everywhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/?attachment_id=3951\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3951\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-3951\" src=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_0934-2-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"697\" height=\"523\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_0934-2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_0934-2-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_0934-2-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_0934-2-640x480.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 697px) 100vw, 697px\" \/><\/a>Next, as the light waned, we headed to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harvard.edu\/\">Harvard<\/a>, which has that traditional Ivy League aura about the campus. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/?attachment_id=3952\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3952\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-3952\" src=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_0940-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"697\" height=\"523\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_0940-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_0940-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_0940-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/IMG_0940-640x480.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 697px) 100vw, 697px\" \/><\/a>During a quick family meeting in the Harvard Yard, we figured out which school each child will attend and established a surefire plan for securing three admissions and an inexpensive condo for the parents for weekend visits. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a great relief knowing this plan is now pretty much in the bag. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">The next day, the kids and I hopped on a train bound for Salem, Massachusetts. At the next stop, as the conductor came around for tickets, a nearby passenger requested a ticket to Manchester-by-the-Ocean.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">He meant, I presume, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manchester.ma.us\/257\/About-Manchester-by-the-Sea\">Manchester-by-the-Sea<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">I smiled and looked up, and caught the eye of a passenger sitting across the aisle, facing me. She laughed aloud, and said, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Well, close enough.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">This made me laugh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">She took this as an invitation to talk. And talk.
