{"id":3045,"date":"2015-04-11T21:23:37","date_gmt":"2015-04-12T01:23:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/?p=3045"},"modified":"2015-04-11T21:28:52","modified_gmt":"2015-04-12T01:28:52","slug":"april-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/?p=3045","title":{"rendered":"April on the Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve written about the wild life we have here on the Carolina coast, about animals I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve never seen in Chicago, like <a title=\"Gotta Get Me Some Gator\" href=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/?p=1333\" target=\"_blank\">alligators<\/a>, <a title=\"My View from the Deck: Part Five\" href=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/?p=2317\" target=\"_blank\">dolphins<\/a>, <a title=\"Natural Pest Control\" href=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/?p=1425\" target=\"_blank\">geckos<\/a>, <a title=\"Crabs Are in the House\" href=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/?p=1412\" target=\"_blank\">crabs that invade our garage<\/a> (and sometimes our house), <del>roaches<\/del> <del>water bugs<\/del> palmetto bugs that are an unavoidable aspect of coastal living in the South, and even the <a title=\"Coffee with Christine: Recapping the Summer of 2014\" href=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/?p=2919\" target=\"_blank\">corn snake that visited my deck chair<\/a> one fine evening last summer.<\/p>\n<p>This month, two days ago to be precise, a megalolizard visited our yard.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/?attachment_id=3046\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3046\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-3046\" src=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/100_8860-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"100_8860\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/100_8860-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/100_8860-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>Baby-Girl and I rounded the corner of our backyard, happened upon him, and naturally, I screamed. Being neck-deep in a bee phobia, Baby-Girl screamed before she could even see what I was screaming about, and then jumped around me continuing to scream until she realized we were screaming about a megalolizard and not a small bee. When she learned the truth, she ceased her jumping and screaming, and continued on like someone who wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t walking right by a foot-long lizard.<\/p>\n<p>The upside, however, is the fact that the megalolizard may be single-handedly able to obliterate the island\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s palmetto bug population. But still. They\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re palm trees.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/?attachment_id=3049\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3049\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-3049\" src=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_9663-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_9663\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_9663-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_9663-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>We did a marsh sweep last weekend, which is like a community beach sweep, where volunteers comes together to rid the beach of litter. Except, in this case, our setting was the salt marsh. And we, in this case, didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t mean the community; it meant my two sons.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and in this case, a few dollars may have changed hands on account of their mother got tired of looking at the whiskey bottles amid the marsh grass but didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t really feel like getting her own self stuck in the pluff mud.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/?attachment_id=3050\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3050\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-3050\" src=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_9673-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_9673\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_9673-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_9673-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>For the record, they were not my whiskey bottles; I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t drink whiskey. But if I did, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m reasonably confident that I wouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be pitching them into the marsh.
