And if you had told me 10 years or more ago that someday undomesticated crabs would, in fact, be in my house?<\/p>\n<p>I honestly have no clue how I would have reacted. I can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t even begin to picture it.<\/p>\n<p>While we occasionally found them underneath our house by the beach (it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s on pilings), we never had one inside the house. Now that we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re on a salt marsh, they are what you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d call regulars.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/?attachment_id=1413\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1413\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-1413\" title=\"100_4868\" src=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/100_4868-1009x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"649\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/100_4868-1009x1024.jpg 1009w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/100_4868-295x300.jpg 295w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/100_4868.jpg 1417w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>Most often, they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re in our garage, but occasionally, one makes its way inside our house, like this one. He was there to remind me that I needed to sweep the floor and clean the baseboards.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/?attachment_id=1414\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1414\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1414\" title=\"100_4943\" src=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/100_4943-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"655\" height=\"873\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/100_4943-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.anislandmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/100_4943-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 655px) 100vw, 655px\" \/><\/a>I found this one crawling about five feet off the ground on a doorframe.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the crabs we find are fiddler crabs and marsh crabs as opposed to the ghost crabs and walking crabs more common in our experience by the ocean. Thus they are smaller, an inch or two in length, and unfortunately easy to miss when you are going about your business, unsuspectingly, in your home. My daughter, therefore, has given herself the position of crab defender, often throwing herself in harm\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s way to protect an unsuspecting crab from the oblivious steps of siblings and parents as they move throughout the house. The initial screech, followed by the subsequent indignation in her voice, is a force we all would prefer to avoid.<\/p>\n<p>Well, all of us except possibly her younger brother, who I strongly suspect sometimes feigns oblivion, just to hear the lion roar.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Crabs are in the house, folks.
